2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Change Follows Mixed Response
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a clearer vision.
The president expressed that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed focus, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock development group.
Here is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the necessity for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to consideration and reimagined the title with a renewed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its potential to our fans.
The trust in this project grows every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce the new hire as the incoming Director of the team. After some time of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having devoted the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most popular series in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the evolution of the game in the time to follow.
David
Background of the New Leader
Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the game as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary reads. "Face the rivals with fresh skills, risks, and obstacles that change every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Alternatively go big, risk it all, and trust your squad can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
Project Ethos has not yet received an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but enthusiasts can expect additional details as development progresses.
